AGCOM 590 – New Media Technology

Created in 2007 under a special topics class, our emerging media technology course was upgraded to a fully listed course in 2008.  AGCOM 590 – New Media Technology explores the uses and application of emerging innovations in personal and mass communications.

The following is the purpose and Student Learning Outcomes for the course:

This hands-on class focuses on the exploration of emerging “new media” technologies such as blogging, podcasting, RSS and other Web 2.0 media, mobile (hand-held) device convergence, as well as simple web page design principles, and the concepts of social networking.  Students will begin with an exploration of underlying human communication theory, as well as Rogers’ Theory of Innovation Diffusion to provide a context of how society adopts and incorporates new technology.

Students will learn to use/application of new media technologies to tell stories and convey information, and to have interactive conversations and build relationships with global audiences. Class format will combine brief lectures, guest speakers and in-class discussions with “how to” demonstrations and hands-on labs.

Students completing this course will be able to:

  • Demonstrate and apply excellent written, verbal, listening and visual communication skills
  • Use and evaluate technologies that enhance the communication process
  • Apply ethical practices in daily work and recognize media and corporate roles and responsibilities in society
